OB Visit - August

Quick trip to the OB today & Lomax went nuts.  Here are the details:

We arrive for our appointment & I can feel him moving around, doing laps or whatever he's doing in there, but it's not enough activity to be seen with the naked eye.  I look at this as our special baby/mommy time.  :)

Dean & I get escorted into the exam room and on the table next to us are a series of omninous looking instruments, pads & test tube things.  My alarm bells went off thinking - what the frack is that stuff for!?  I remembered next month was the glucose screening test, but why would there be a gyn-exam kit set up.  UGH!

The nurse mid-wife came in (my OB was on vacation) and we chatted about my complaints (swelling, lack of sleep... nothing earth shattering).  Then she pulled out the heart monitor.  I lay back on the table and she lubed up my belly.

"My, he's a mover, isn't he?!" the nurse mid-wife said.  And it was true... Lomax was not sitting still.  She found the heartbeat for a second or two, then he moved.  In fact, every time she came close to him, he would fly around to another part of my belly.

Lomax's first game of hide-and-seek!

This went on for a few minutes, the nurse midwife told a joke that made me laugh.  To give you a picture, the more pregnant I become, the more my belly shakes when I laugh.  It's very much like a bowl of jell-o & I feel a bit like Santa Clause which only makes me laugh more.  It's a thing.

The heart monitor tool is a lot like a mini-karaoke machine.  It has a tiny speaker, like a baby monitor that is attached by a cord to what looks like a microphone.  The microphone doesn't have holes where you speak into it, though.  Instead, it is just a microphone shaped thing.  Where the holes would ordinarily be is a yellow plastic cap.  On this cap, the doctor or nurse puts the lube and the lube is what goes on your belly.

Well, if you start to giggle uncontrollably while this hole-less microphone is on your belly, it sounds an awful lot like a DJ scratching on one of those early rap records.

So here's the scene - the nurse has the monitor, I'm laying on my back & can see Dean across the room between my knees, Lomax is flying around my womb.  The nurse tells a joke & I start to giggle which makes the monitor sound like a DJ scratching a record in an 80's rap song and makes my belly jiggle like a bowl of Jell-O which makes me giggle more which makes the scratching louder.  I steal a glance between my legs at Dean who is also giggling, but holding his head in his hand at the absurdity of it all.  The nurse is laughing too... which is probably why she hasn't removed the hole-less microphone from my belly so I keep laughing which makes my belly jiggle... and on & on it goes.  Meanwhile, I think Lomax stopped moving for a moment due to the "earthquake" that must be how my laughter feels to him.

Finally, the nurse removed the device from my stomach so we could all collect ourselves.  I stopped laughing & Lomax goes back to zooming around the womb keeping away from the microphone.  Eventually, he tires out & lets us all hear his wonderful little heart beat

I just love that sound.
